Overview & Help
The NYHOPS model forecast page presents both current and historical forecasts
for many regions and parameters. These regions include geographical areas as well as longitudinal-
and cross-sections. The available parameters (e.g., salinity, currents) differ from region to
region. For further information, see:
New York Harbor Observing and Prediction System (NYHOPS)
This page also presents numerous time series, in which model and observational data
are plotted for a 72-hour period. Time series are provided for approximately 40 stations.
The table below matches regions to parameters. Moving your mouse over the entries in either column
will display the corresponding regions or parameters. For example, moving your mouse over the "Manhattan Waters"
region will highlight the parameters available for that region. Conversely, moving your mouse over the
"Currents (Surface)" parameter will highlight the regions for which surface currents are modeled.
How to use the blue Control Panel to change the display
There are three major dropdown select controls at the top of the control panel:
The first two,Region and Parameter, are used to display model maps.
First select a Region, then select a Parameter.
The 3rd, Time Series, displays a list of stations for which time series of model and
observed data are available. When viewing a time series, you may return to the model map by
clicking anywhere on the time series graph.
Time Series are also represented on maps through use of a white-bordered square with a square dot in the middle.
() Clicking on
a square will take you to the time series for that station.
Using the Animation Controls
Each day, a 48-hour forecast is done, in one-hour increments. By default, the forecast for the current
hour is displayed. The animation controls may be used to move from hour to hour, or to start and stop
an animation.
Zooming In & Out
You may zoom in and out when viewing a model map in one of two ways: First, clicking on the map zooms in,
and right-clicking zooms out. Alternatively, you may click on the zoom controls in the control box:
